LANTHORN ON MAIN. 2010

An Artisan Centre in the heart of Woodstock. The design of this building seeks to make a historical connection between Table Mountain and the sea by integrating the original mountain tributaries (which used to cross over the site) into the planning and greening scheme of the precinct. With one of the main features of this scheme being a series of cascading reed-bed filtration systems which function as both purifiers as well as unusual exhibition spaces. The building itself is constructed using lightweight steel and Lexan panels. These materials create light ethereal spaces during the day; whilst radiating light at night; which in turn draws people to the precinct

This piece of architecture was fuelled by the idea of potential events; creating a place of experiment and experience whilst offering an exciting interplay and show case of contemporary artisan culture within the gentrified neighbourhood of Woodstock. One of the key architectural elements is the use of material thresholds to integrate its residential and commercial programme into a holistic scheme.
